Story was not up to par to Yimou's other great films but the cinematography is spectacular.
The red, or should I say crimson, was the most exhilarating. Framing and movement was absolutely seamless.
Doyle is just incredible and under appreciated in the Western World. I bet he will be remembered as one of the greatest DP's of his generation.
'Hero' - anybody seen it yet?

Yeah...I saw it. Chris Doyle is great. But I really was disappointed with the movie. It was Crouching Tiger over again and I just don't appreciate that type of movie. I don't understand wire work and why we're supposed to appeciate it when it has nothing to do with my life or the real world. And there was little story and no depth to what was there.
I like Doyle with Kar Wai because those movies address the human condition and because Kar Wai's aesthetic pushes Doyle more. Although the colors were beautiful in Hero, the composition and technique is still better in every other Kar Wai movie (IMHO). But why did Escoffier get the 2046 gig over Doyle until he died and Doyle took over. I always wonder about that.
Other people I've noticed (that are still alive): Alwin H. Kuchler, Wally Pfister.
