Fomapan and the lab

Post by David M. Leugers »

Today I had a conversation with Paul, who runs Film and Video Services in Minneapolis. He has made the decision to no longer process Fomapan. They only receive a roll or two per week, and it is not worth the risk to them of either damaging someones film and/or ruining their chemicals due to the nature of Fomapan. They have been unable to pinpoint what the problem is with using their Kodak reversal chemicals with Fomapan because sometimes it works well and other times it is a disaster. I agreed that it was not worth the risk. I have had both excellent and bad experiences over the years with Fomapan. I admire the dedication of Paul who took over operating the lab from Gary rather than see it close. He shoots lots of S-8mm film himself and is a real booster for film. I will continue to support Film and Video because of their service and prices.

Does anyone know of a lab in the USA that processes Fomapan, especially in the Fomapan chemicals?

The big rub with Fomapan in the U.S. is that nobody seems to want to process it! If you look at the development sheet, it has a longer rinse time indicated than the Kodak stocks. I suppose it is largely a home processing job. I don't even know where to get Fomadon here without resorting to foreign mail order.

Film and Video Services has fantastic prices listed on their website, and only a buck a roll for shipping. Is this still the case? How's their quality? Brodsky and Treadway used to compliment them often.

Their website is greatly outdated! Call them to get current prices and to check to see if they offer the services you are looking for. I have had some B+W reversal processed by them in the past few months, even some accient 4-X reversal which all came out beautiful. Basically, if it is Kodak B+W reversal, then they do it. They also processed some really old GAF B+W reversal that also came out good. Fomapan is just not worth the risk of ruining their batch of chemicals and other customers films... can't blame them.

Hi to all!

Where Fomapan gets really useful as a hobbist tool is at home processing. I would sugest try to get a russian tank or similar device and do some diy process with it. Two weeks ago I was testing a bolex DS8 camera with small pieces from a 30m spool, shot them, and processed right away and saw the results a couple of hours later. Then I was able to make the proper adjustmenst to the camera (if I was a certified technician I wouldn't need this, but being and average Joe...). Don't get the foma kit, it's time consuming, can't reuse bleach and cleaning bath is really bad for your lungs. Get some d-19 and the rest of the formulas is easy. Times are the same as with Plus-x but you'll probably need to experiment a little bit.
Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Morales

Fomapan liked the old reversal bleach. If you use that instead of the new Kodak chemistry, you can even push it 2 stops. Would love to find a lab that could still do that. If anyone has info, please let me know. I used to use that film all the time in my Canon DS8 for night shots at parties. Haven't since Franklin closed their doors about 2 years ago, when the chemistry changed.
