Tri-X : Who is Cheapest?

Post by Phillip Rhodes »

Hello everyone, I'm still on the hunt for cheap black and white Super 8 film stock. I have given up on sourcing film from North Korea, China and Eastern Europe. So it's Kodak Tri-X or nothing. Question is: who is the cheapest?

I have asked www.7dayshop.com (UK) if they can stock Tri-X because they charge only £7.99 for Ektachrome 64T, which is the cheapest in Europe. I emailed them to see if they could stock Tri-X charging the same price, but as yet no reply...

So, does anyone know anyone selling cheap Tri-X or other cheap black and white stock?

Oh, there is someone selling Kodachrome 40 (pack of ten) on ebay.de current price 2.50 Euros: http://shop.ebay.de/?_from=R40&_trksid= ... Categories and http://cgi.ebay.de/10x-Kodak-Kodachrome ... 240%3A1318

The film is quite fresh (expiring date circa 1981)…

Best Wishes

I asked 7dayshop too actually Phil, quite a few months ago - they got back to me and said they were looking into it and hopefully should be able to stock some, and they said it would be definately cheaper than the current market price elsewhere. Having said that, there's still no sign of it on their site I guess.

Expired Tri-x can go for pretty cheap on ebay, I got a cart (yet to be used) that was about 10 years old for just over a quid. My only source for new stock has been Kodak in New York - it worked out to about £4.50-5.00 a cart when I bought a lot of it there last summer, which is ludicrous considering 64T cost the same from them as it does from 7dayshop. Why is black and white more expensive here, and way less there?

Anyway, I've shot bugger all of it yet, as I'm still hoping I'll be able to find somewhere to process it as cheap as Dwayne's do my K40 and 64T.

How much do you want? I can get any amount for $11-12 directly from Kodak, and so can you. Not sure if they'll ship it directly to you. If not I can get it for you and ship it directly to you USPS International Priority Mail flat rate box which will hold 10-20 carts for $15-25 USD. If you want some funky wired stuff get some old Svema from Olex in Ukraine . I have one in the fridge I use sometime for something different like a dark/twisted dream scene, or perhaps a retro looking film. There's also some really slow films like Kahl Document 10 and Pro 8mm has a 12 ASA Hi Con... Happy filming.

In my experience the cheapest place to buy Super8 film in the UK is from Kodak themselves:

http://motion.kodak.com/GB/en/motion/index.htm

Click on the word "Vision" on the left and you will get the contact details somewhere in that document.

I used to deal with Dan Clark - I notice his name is still mentioned, but he may be in a differnet capacity now. Someone will help you.

Importantly you should tell them you are a low budget student cinematographer. Have a project title also.

However it has been a couple of years since I bought any Super8
