New Camera!

Post by Section8 »

I just got a new camera - it's a Sankyo XL-620 Supertronic and it looks like it was hardly used! F=7.5~45mm 1:1.2 Macro lens with all the bells and whistles. Threw some batteries in it and all functions appear to be working properly, man I can't wait to run some film through it! 8O

I've done some searching and I can't seem to come up with a price when it was new. Anyone know what you'd pay for this new?

I am guessing (w/o looking at the old super8filmaker magazines) that is was about $425 Suggested Retail with a realistic selling price of $299?

Just a guess - but a good one!

I remember Martin Baumgarten posting years back about his Sankyo 620 and when he bought it new. A quick google larked it out

Original selling price back in 1981 was about $359.95 if you bought it from the big city camera houses. I paid $459.95 for my XL 620 which listed at $689 or thereabouts. Taking inflation into account.....that was plenty of money 20 years ago.

According to the CJR Inflation Calculator, $460 1981 dollars is equivalent to $912.70 in 2002 dollars, the most current year the calculator accommodates. $689 in 1981 dollars would be $1367.06 in 2002 dollars.

Thanks for the info gentlemen! filmbuff, I had found Martin's site and read that same piece. I guess I was having a senior moment because I thought he was talking about the XL-420.

I look at these older cameras and think "When this was new - how great this must have been"! Even in this digital age, I love these older cameras - I think I'm just as thrilled about this camera as the original owner was!
