Canon 814 xl-s black foam!

Post by bakasutchi »

Hello, I have just bought a Canon 814 xl-s and have noticed that the black foam around the film door that acts as a light barrier, has turned to a sticky mess. I understand that this is a common problem with 30 year plus cameras. Has anyone had any experience with replacing this material and can offer some advice on sourcing a replacement or a material that could replace it. Many thanks for any info.

There are a few sellers on eBay that offer this foam material.
Just do a search for "light seal foam".

Also ca be obtained from Fargo Enterprises

look under Camera Restoration Supplies

Good luck.

Cheers,

I think there's no real risk. My 1014 XLS has lost almost all this foam and under the Spanish summer sun I have never noticed any problem.

Hi! There is no need for replacement material. Just clean out the sticky mess and use black wire tape and place this over the film type window in the door. I did this with my 1014xl-s (onm both sides of the door) and have had many trouble free years of shooting with it.
