Compression for DVD

Post by Rick Palidwor »

I have 45 minutes of 8mm footage my uncle shot in the 50's which I want to put onto DVD for the family. It's curently Quicktime (9 Gigs) and I tried compressing with Compressor (v. 1.0.1 - it came with the OS 10.3 / FCP v4.5 system) and I am very unhappy with the results. Someone suggested I upgrade the Quicktime to QT Pro and compress it there.

Any opinions on this? Alternate suggestions? (I am not overly tech savvy so keep it simple if possible, please)

Thanks
Rick

If you're going to use DVD Studio Pro to make the DVD, I recommend using the encoder inside it.

Save your money, Quicktime Pro doesn't encode to MPEG 2

Thanks Blin
I had started with that and someone here said not to. I will try it.

Just make sure that your encoding rates are set high in your preferences. With only 45 minutes of footage you can afford to have a high bitrate on a 4.7GB DVD.

Th best results I've had are from encoding directly to .m2v files direct from Final Cut Pro. With only 45 minutes you can afford to set to the 7-8 range comfortably. Quality should be excellent.

um, in what way, how, where, when, was the moon full, did the fat lady sing? somehow your post seems a bit lacking in information. :-)

Isn't Quicktime Pro included with Final Cut Pro?
