Sharpen Ciro Splicer Cutting Blade?

Post by Roget »

I have a Ciro Super-8 tape splicer that my father bought new in 1983. It was used regularily until about 1986, then just kept in its box until I decided to start shooting again in '04.

While the splicer is in mint condition, the cutting blade is no longer sharp. Have any of you ever tried to sharpen the blade? According to the Ciro website, the blade is stainless steel.

Any suggestions to start me off?

You can probably take the blade to a machine shop and they can sharpen it for you.

If you choose not to sharpen, a replacement blade can be had for $65 at Christy's Editorial:

They call it a "Super 8mm metal U-knife with screws for guillotine splicer". I would phone them to double-check, but I think all their guillotine splicers are Ciro brand since they are the U.S. dealer for CIR.
