If you've shot Fomapan, look here!

Post by Dr_Strangelove »

Theres always a lot of talk about the czech film Fomapan r100, it seems to be quite a popular subject in this forum. I'm planning to shoot my ten minute short in 16mm black and white film, and I'll probably go for fomapan instead of kodak's reversal films mostly because its cheaper but also because Ive heard its more beautiful... But I'm not convinced yet! So I urge you to post samples of your fomapan film in this thread so I can make up my mind since its pretty much impossible to find any sample of it on the net, no one has bothered to post a picture at all. So please do us all a favour and show the beauty of the fomapan film.

Thanks

Foma may be fine, but... How would you improve on Plus-X? It's been around forever, mainly because it is about perfect for the application; studio and outdoor shooting. And modern Tri-X is no slouch either, it's significantly improved over the previous versions.

I'd upgrade cameras, lenses, lighting, staging, costumes, makeup, anything on screen before worrying about the quality of modern b&w film stocks.

FomaPan R100 looks different to the Kodak stocks.

I often prefer it but there are times when I'd choose plus-x or tri-x instead...I mainly shoot FomaPan because its stupidly cheap.

Better, different, more/less beautiful...depends what you want to achieve.

I'd experiment with the Foma before I committed to shooting your short.

cheaper than Kodak with the student discount?

Post by thebigidea »

I'm obsessed with the reformulated tri-x and have been shooting dozens of 16mm rolls and super-8 carts of it lately but always love trying out something else...

how cheap can it be had?

I'd love to see pics as well.

the cheapeast I found was around $20 on a czech website, its probably not worth importing to the US because of the cost for shipping but iif you're in Europe like myself, its a good price.

I think the main drawback of fomapan is the base. I find it very fragile

I've achieved very good results with FOMAPAN,

I also develop it, so, it gets almost cheaper than super8 from kodak,

There is a spanish site that sells it for 16 EUROS

So, what are you waiting for to shoot?

I'll try to post something soon

I almost don't use any digital stuff now

There is nothing wrong with the base of Fomapan. I split DS8 into S8 in the dark and use that in refilled cartridges.

Aren't you confusing Foma with the russian Svema/Quarzchrome?
Kind regards,

no, I'm not confusing: I use fomapapan (and process it myself) in reg8mm all the time. I just say that I find that the base is fragile, but can be used with great satisfaction. Just use it in good working order projectors and it'll be ok. Of course if you 'll telecine the problem there isn't any problem at all.
Emulsion its very fine, I like it very much.
In Italy it is sold cheap, look at my second post here for more infos: viewtopic.php?t=13440&highlight=. They don't have in catalogue 16mm, but write them, maybe they can order it (they are very nice people)

Hi, everybody!

Dr. Strangelove, FOMA is available from http://www.foto-r3.com in Asturias, Spain. 10m double8 and double super8 is euro 5.99. Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Fomapan is avalable for a good price on that site. I would also like to note that R100 is also avalable in 16mm on that site for 17€.

I think the Kodak films look better. The one advantage of Foma is that you can push it to 400 ASA. But that advantage has gone away unless you use the old chemistry...and I don't know of any lab that is. I guess if you develop it at home...

I finally found a clip to see what fomapan looks like, its DS8 but one can still see the characteristics of the film.

So check the clip out and tell me what you guys think of what you see because I'm seriously considering using fomapan film, in my eyes it looks amazing.

its around 20 megs big
