of course. what i meant is that the acl is not made anymore and if you want a similar camera now it's an aaton, and that costs ten times as much as the a-cam. the argument that a used camera is cheaper than a new one is a no-brainer and not very interesting in my opinion. hopefully the rental companies will replace their stock of a-cams in a while and those who bought one for a certain project will sell too. and hopefully that will mean the price will drop to around half, and then we're talking.

The magazine just arrived and, yes, there is a great offer to have a DS-8 version. If at least 25 customers are willing to make a deposit of € 1000, they will build the camera! The final price will be 5200 euros, so the first customers (minus the deposit) can have it for 4200 euros when ready.

Quite a lot of money 8O

I think I keep my Beaulieus!

Actually I think the point of the 'early-adopter' incentive is that you make a 1000E deposit, then you also get another 1000E discount so need to pay another 3200E making a total of 4200E.

Yes its really tough. People want a new small gauge camera, but then it is expensive when compared to the only other option - second hand cameras. It would be easier to take the plunge if new Beaulieau cameras were also available as they would cost a similar sum.

I really want this camera to be made ... we need to encourage film schools to see DS8 as a great educational option.

only DS8 stocks you can get right now is 100D

Is that all? The best color reversal stock on the planet... what else do we need to make a great film with? Sure, I'd like every stock to be available, but no 8mm format can lay claim to that.

That is my understanding, too - a total price of €4200 for the first 25 pre-orders. I hope it happens.

Ok --

My 1000 is ready to sail to Sweden.

I looked on the ikonosop web site--no info whatsoever.

Can anyone point me to the correct info and contact?

My vote is still for a K-3 conversion to DS8. It would be much cheaper and have a mirror reflex viewfinder.
Pretty good idea Paul. I would add a "C" mount to the camera to make it more viable. The zoom lens on the K-3 is far too long for S-8mm. With a "C" mount you could use many great primes and zoom lenses that give better wide angle coverage. I imagine a lens such as the Angenieux 8-64mm zoom in C mount would nicely cover a widened S-8mm gate... Add a Tobin sync drive... would really be cool!

I would also add the possibility of rewinding the film to make lap-dissolves possible.

Hey!

What happened to Ikonoskop's DS8 conversion offer? Any takers?

What are the current DS8 film stock offerings and from whom?

Can any machinist presently convert 16mm to DS8? I do not mean the standard R8 to DS8 conversion.

update - from their home page:

http://www.ikonoskop.com/news/index.asp
1/27/2006: Ikonoskop A-Cam DS-8.
IF at least 25 customers are willing to make a deposit of Euro 1000 for the new camera we will build it!

The list price will be Euro 5200, i.e. the same as SP16. The reward for an early sign up will be a discount for the same amount as the deposit of Euro 1000, i.e. the final price will then be Euro 4200. The DS-8 cam will have the same look and feel as our S16 model. Early adopters that want to make the deposit; please register by sending an email to info@ikonoskop.com with the subject "Early adopter for A-Cam DS8". Include in the body, name and address.

Funny. It's just a gadget blog regurgitating what I wrote on Retro Thing. :)

freedom4kids: They obviously didn't get enough pre-orders to make it reality. Much as I'd love one, the price is far too high for all but a few professionals shooting music videos.

Reflex: I understand. Lets not flog a dead horse.

But my question remains. What other lightweight 2nd hand reflex/non reflex 16mm cameras exist that can be machined for DS8? I am not referring to the standard Bolex R8 - DS8 conversions.

There is a potential method to my proposed machining madness.

The horse may be dead now, but I did write & call a few times with 2000 in hand, to "pre-order" 2 cams.

There was noone on the other side to take my money or write a response.
