Random quick question for you 16mm shooters

Post by supa_ate_sixteen »

Hi,

It seems there is no "active" boards out there where people are still talking about 16mm stuff. cinematography.com which was recommended before hardly has a single post past March and other forums dont have new posts since last year! If you know of a still "active" forum please post it here, I would love to know where we can chat up 16mm online. Maybe we should add a seperate forum on this site for the occosational 16mm dabbers?

Anyhoo, here is my quick 16mm question. Arriflex specificly I guess.

Do they make an adapter that allows one to use C mount lenses on an Arriflex camera? (C mount > standard Arri mount?) I'm not talking Arri > C mount either. I already know there are several adapters that allow one to use Arriflex lenses on a C mount camera but is there an adapter vise versa? I have a cool 5.3mm Wollensak fisheye that I used on my old Beaulieu R16 but now I have upgraded to an Arriflex 16S and still want to use the Cmount lens. If not, anyone looking for a fisheye for thier C mount 16mm camera? I bought it for $250 and would sell it for the same. Its minty! :)

Thanks

the alt.movies.cinematography news group is pretty good, and the great david mullen is there as well. ;-) if you don't have usenet access, perhaps andreas can add it to that section on this site?

Hey,

I think the limitation may be the film plane-to-lens flange distance. The c-mount distance is some number just over 17mm. If a lens standard has a film plane-to-lens flange distance greater than this then a screw on adapter is feasible (Nikon, Canon, Pentax etc.) that's why c-mount cameras are so versatile.

Going the other way (conveting to a mount that requires a smaller distance) poses problems (near impossible) unless the camera body is modified/adapted.

so if you wanted to get lenses to use on a c-mount camera but wanted to be able to use the lenses on whatever camera you get in the future what would be a good type of lenses to get?

Are there any problems with using the same set of lenses with different format cameras? specifically using one set of lenses for both a Beaulieu 4008 and R16. I asume that the super8 lenses probably won't cover the entire image area of the R16 so wouldn't work with it, but could you use the R16 lenses without any problem on the 4008?

So basically your saying "no, there is no adapter because its impossible to work" or are you saying "finding this adapter will be hard but possible if your lens element is close to the C mount thread" ? Anyone looking for a fisheye for $250? It would work quite good for both a Super 8 or 16mm. To cover 16mm you neet a teleconverter which I also have.

16mm filmers

I would like to second the motion to have a 16mm forum either separate from the 8mm or include in the same forum. I shoot R-8mm, S-8mm and 16mm (when I can 8) and think that there are probably many others who do as well. It can also be an interest to those who wish to learn more about 16mm or to those stepping up to the larger format. As great as the 8mm formats are, 16mm shown on a 8ft screen blows me away. Kodachrome in 16mm is incredibly expensive, but the results can be breathtaking and it is a great archival film stock.

The schneider lenses were designed specifically for the Arriflex and have been superb lenses and are not known to cause problems. I wouldnt put a lens on a camera that wasnt designed for it.

Yeah but its a real shame that any wide angle you want to throw on an Arri wider than 10mm is like over a thousand dollars. Any suggestions otherwise because this glass is a paperweight if I cant use it?
