Kodak prices in Europe compared to USA

Post by mathis »

Hi,

this thread about Fomapan brought my attention to John Schwind and I had a look at his sight and I was so amazed how cheap Kodak films go there. I mean, a Plus-X for 11 Dollars compared to 16plus Euros at Wittner, Germany. 11 Dollars are currently 8 Euros and 30 cents, that´s roughly half the prize.
He indicates he ships also international. Did anybody from Europe already bought Kodak film from a shop in the States?

Bests,

Comparing USA and European prices has long been a problem. Even after VAT has been added the prices is often still cheaper in the USA.

The only other cost advantages must be overheads and wages. As it is not wages one can only asume overhead costs, premises etc. are cheaper. There are other factors, including quantities bought, transport (cheaper fuel) and so on. These can be the only explanation for European manufactured goods sometimes being cheaper, even allowing for taxes, than in their home market.

Isn't there a "big mac index" or something that compares prices between countries? (I really don’t know what I’m talking about here), but we (norway) would have to pay approx 7 big macs for one k40

I've always thought that Wittner are rather expensive though - Vision stock from Kodak in the UK = £9.40 including VAT and free postage. Wittner = £13.37 (19.40 Euro 1.45 exchange)= 40% additional

Don't forget also that the Dollar is really weak at the moment - the $10 for a roll of PlusX in double 8 from John Schwind becomes £5.50 - £6.00

Have to think about UK vat etc, but still cheap.

Here in Hong Kong it's 16 big macs for a roll of k40, assuming that I order it from the cheapest source at 10 uk pounds,so it's no longer economical to order film from Europe now, the Euro and the uk pound is so strong against the us dollar!:x

There are some big differences in prices around the UK, Lees cameras charge £14.00 a cart, Widescreen center £14.25 a cart, the best place is 7dayshop at £10.15 at the moment.

Jessops are always worth a look for K40: £10.79 if you buy 10 rolls, including vat. - at least it was the last time a I checked 3-4 months ago.

Other advantage is that they generally always keep a stock of it, unless it is one of their very small shops. I think their standard stock level is 10.

I bought some from them back in July that was a couple of months out of date and the price was £5.99 per cart regardless of quantity.

Ya big macs really are a way that people use to gauge how much wealthy or how poor a nation/region is compared to another like some sort of sick joke about how McDonalds is everywhere. I just love how now its converted into k-40's.

In the UK it used to be the MARS bar index for comparing inflation, but since it now appears in 101 varieties it is naturally out of favour.

I assume the standard BIG MAC is the same world-wide?

According to this
http://www.economist.com/markets/bigmac/about.cfm
http://www.economist.com/markets/bigmac ... id=3503641
The big mac index is based on 120 countries.
The cheapest k40 I have seen I Norway is 5-6 burgers (if you get 5), but one shop also sells them for 11-12 burgers.

Just reread that last sentence and out of context…
