What is a Canon 518 SV?

Post by jhoneycutt »

Folks...

I know what a Canon 518 camera is. Can someone tell me what a Canon 518 SV is and how it is different from the 518?

Thanks

It has the same lens specs as the 518 (5X zoom, f1.8) but is a later model and resembles the autozoom electronic series in design but without all the features. I have no idea what the SV stands for. Not a bad camera.

Hello Jack,

I was wondering what's the SV mean too.

Just went to the canon site, and here is the answer.

SV is the system that support the Iris's movement, it makes the iris more steady, during its open and close.

518SV has one glass added in the lens for sharpness improvement

Finder is bigger and brighter than 518

There are Super and Single 8'S 518SV, the optical improvement was almost the same.

well I don't really know the difference to all the other ones but I own a Canon autozoom 518SV.. I know there's the 518, 518SV, autozoom 518 and autozoom 518SV..

although I can't tell the difference between all of them, let me know if you have any questions about the autozoom 518SV..

oh, one thing I can tell you is that the camera body is a bit different.. the non-SV's have a side-door for the S8 cart.. the autozoom SV is loaded through a back door ;) See, I do know a thing or two :P

take care

There is also a Single-8 518 SV. I believe these have a multi-coated lens.

I could be wrong but I think the 518 SV has the option of shooting at 24fps whereas the 518 does not? Can anyone confirm this?

Yes it shoots 18, 24 and also 36fps.
If your looking at buying one, hunt around for the 518SV with the Wide Angle Lens included..

I picked my package up at Garage Sale for $30 AUD.

yup, 18, 24, and 36.. plus single frame with a shutter release cable..

I got mine with the telephoto lens, stupid me thought it was the wide angle.. I didn't even check :D

anyway, nice camera, but very simplistic features.. I'd love it even more if it had "trigger-able" single frame shot.. so I could use my new intervalometer lol..

I have had mine for nearly a year and haven't put a cart through it yet.
How sharp are the optics?

The Canon 518 SV has full mechanical rather than electronic manual aperture control, which is a major plus. Later electronic Canons such as the 814E have manual aperture control circuits with component failures due to ageing.
