DS8 perforator

Post by mr8mm »

The reversal lab in Spain has a DS8 perforator listed on ebay. I do not have the link. Do an ebay search to see. He wants 400 euro.

Looks like you pop in some single perf 16mm and crank out ds8.

Wish I had the $$. Be neat to have the vision stocks in ds8.

Amazing that someone selling specialized photography equipment for good $$ can't provide a single picture of the thing in focus!

Using single perf 16mm will not get DS8. Maybe S8 but not DS8. DS8 is 16mm wide, so the 16mm perf's would interfere with the S8 perf's. Maybe someone should contact the seller and find out what's going on.

The pictures are good enough to see that the DS8 perforation on the 16 mm perforation side "wanders" between the big holes. Seems to be just a film sample for demonstration.
For proper function you'd need unperforated 16 mm film, wherever you get it from.

I have contacted him before. He was responsive and polite! His friend is an engineer and made the die. He was selling for 550 Euro before. Would be nice to see some footage from film he perf'd, before spending that kind of money! But the again, where else are you going to find a DS8 Perforator?

Estimado revelado_reversible:

sorry. I do not speak spanish.

What type of film stock do you start with? Do you start with single perf 16mm?
double perf 16mm? or no perf 16mm?

in your photographs, it appears that the starting material is 16mm single perf.

thank you,

Then it will produce one-sided DS-8 rolls. Or after splitting in 2x8 it will give one long roll of S8 and one S8 with extra holes which could possibly be used for some test-exposing if the S8 perfs aren't mixed up with the 16mm perfs.

Of course there is plenty genuine ciné material in one perf 16mm which should properly work in S8 cameras. But one half is a write off.

It seems to work with one transporter wheel and two inside who do the perforating. The punching wheel uses the 16mm perf to stay on track/sync?
If you are capable of machining these type of component it might just as well have been done through using the transporter wheel to drive a puncher wheel through cogs? Then one could use any type of film as raw material. Even 35mm when the opening was wide enough.
Kind regards,

André

Didn't Kodak make non-perforated 16mm microfilm? Don't know if you can still find it or what ASA we're talking but that would be perfect for that machine.

It needs a 16mm perforation. As seller states.

If would take microfilm like AGFA Copex (Kodak Qlink or what is it called?) you could possibly expose it at ISO 25 when processing it in one of these modern HighContrast managing soups. That would really produce grainless images of extreme sharpness.

Even though the pics are bad I only see two rows of teeth on that die. I don't think the 16mm perfs are used.

The seller, who is supposed to know from the thing itself, states:

An outside eBay deal. Or possibly the seller withdrew after all the questions after the item was made public here :) Smelling a better deal.

anyone know who made the dye?
I asked the seller what brand the perforator is and got no reply back.
maybe the thing is for perforating film stock for the beaulieu or wilcam 200' modified cameras. what one would do with the 1/2 of 16mm film, then 8mm film with odd perforations, i dont know.
