Super 8 Today, Issue #15
Has anyone received issue #15 of Super 8 Today? It seems to me that it's been a long time since issue #14 was published.
Re: Super 8 Today, Issue #15
Last one I got was #14...#15 hasn't arrived here yet,

I ordered a set of back-issues some time ago. Handling that took like 8 weeks and I had to make several reminder calls. Otherwise I would still be waiting.
Kind regards,

Have you called and asked when issue #15 is coming out?? Seems like #14 came out quite awhile ago..
Re: Super 8 Today, Issue #15
Issue #15 of Super 8 Today arrived in today's mail, but along with it came an announcement that #16 would be the final issue. The publisher explained that there were too few subscribers and too little advertising revenue to sustain the magazine - the same reasons smallformat ceased publication not long ago.

Thanks for passing along the sad news, sciolist.
I think Chris did an admirable job in a very tough and shrinking market. I tip my hat to him.

Wasn't there a brief talk about the two magazines merging? Too bad but not really unexpected. The magazines were just too niche to have much of a market and the magazine marketplace is getting pretty ruthless. I think if they had gone for more of an indie/art film magazine approach they might have had a bit more of a chance of surviving.

The modern indie/art scene includes a lot of excellent video work as well as film. Pure film fanatics might not have liked that, although it would have tapped into a much larger audience and advertising base.woods01 wrote:I think if they had gone for more of an indie/art film magazine approach they might have had a bit more of a chance of surviving.

Real disappointed in the magazine's demise. I show it to clients and friends for validation of Super 8mm in today's world.

Me too, Davideo. I often surprized and then convinced many of my students that Super 8 was alive and a valid choice for their films by giving them a complimentary copy of Super8 Today.Davideo wrote:Real disappointed in the magazine's demise. And the fact that it, like smallformat, is an actual hard copy journal, was essential. All this talk of going online with it was just lame, as Chris himself says in the farewell letter--just no interest in it at all.
So it simply won't be the same trying to convince people of the legitimacy of Super 8 by referring them to a bunch of websites. The internet is so incredibly PLAYED.8)
Very disappointed.

But that sacrifice would have been totally worth it. There are plenty of video artists interested in film, be it video to film issues and there are artists still exploring the intricacies of analog video. I'm not aware of there being any magazines that explore the film as art aspect other than the tiny self published zines of film co-ops and university film programs.reflex wrote:The modern indie/art scene includes a lot of excellent video work as well as film. It's a real shame. I only have one issue of "Super 8 Today," but I was very impressed. I feel bad that I didn't subscribe; it might still be around today.
Time to start scarfing up back issues...

Don't know what is the chicken or the egg. I.e. what makes it go down. The magazine wasn't too bad. Different but actually still no match for Smallformat. Or the slowness in publishing and handling business. I suppose it isn't easy in a one half man operation.
But considering how business was done on my pile of back-issue order I am not amazed publishing is to cease. Ordering $100 of goods could at first not interest the publisher. Emails just don't get answered. Then after a revived order and a full payment I had to remind three times before receiving anything. Then the issues were all sent in a separate envelope instead of a much more economic bundle in a USPS flatrate. Thus burning $40 extra needlessly on shipping. When asked: this was because he didn't want to wait in a queue at the post-office.
No wonder

Just got issue #15 and read the letter from the publisher.
Let's bombard him with several articles and letters to make the last issue #16 the biggest one ever. He's willing to add extra pages if necessary.
