Heres what I do. I cut the track up into the bits, lines, and burn a cd with a track for each section of the song. That way I dont have to hunt for a part. I just look at my master list and play track 22 or whatever.

not as good as stage6, but better than youtube....

here is abetter quality upload

http://ptz.blip.tv/#731306

I always use a boombox on set...doing this
I found out that CD players do not run
necessarily at 100% speed of the original...!!

This time we used a small Ipod/boombox combo
...worked great!

It had the whole track divided into small
segments on it, representing the scenes I wanted to
shoot....comes very handy, because there is no
need for mch rewinding and looking for the right
passages on the set..........

For this video, I did not use any extra light..the
stuff in the abandoned factory needed no light
because the ceiling was half transparent, so I used
available light...

>I really want to try for the "coldplay" video look where you shoot hi-speed (36-54fps) on set (and presumably hi-speed music playback on set as well), to get that sort of floaty vibe when played back at 24fps.

That´s what I played around with in this video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WD_b_7OBtEE

starts at 1:50

I shot at 48fps using a playback that ran about 20% faster

The effect is very subliminal...
the problem is...to make the effect more visible you have
to speed up the playback more...
problem withh rap music is, that the rappers mouth has
to move already very fast at original speed..

so you can´t speed up the playback to much, because at some
point (and speed) it becomes impossible to articulate the words properly for the rapper...

It should not be a problem with sung verses, because you can speed up
the music more, because there are fewer words and sylabils...

I am, perhaps, getting a little confused! I would assume you would shoot at 48fps, and sync the sound at 1/2 the speed. Then, you would speed the footage back up to be normal speed. I guess I was thinking about it all wrong! I wonder what it would look like my way?

Now I see what you're saying. Capture the action at a high framerate, but speed the music up to match. Then, it'll all sync immediately in post. OK, got it.

Maybe you could try the reverse. Capture it at 12fps (if your camera can) or 9fps. The music on set would be 1/2 the rate and the guys could rap slower. That might look interesting? You could throw some street action in the back and everything would be sped up but would lip sync exactly. Weird huh?

Like the cleaner version you put up. Indeed the tri-x is capturing some killer images. Well done.

Christian,

It's a nice video. Very professional looking. Certainly if I'd seen it playing on a music channel anywhere I wouldn't have thought it out of place.

Can you explain a bit more about how you use the ipod/boombox setup. This means nothing to me so make your explanation as simple as possible!!! I know what an ipod is obviously. However I've never even seen a boombox. Do they have variable playback speeds? What make do you use? How does the setup work with the ipod? I'm quite keen to have a go at this but, as you can see from my basic questions, know very little.

Thank you

I used this one:

http://www.amazon.de/Logitech-Tragbares ... 229&sr=8-2

I did the speeding up thing of the audio material for the set
with my digital audio workstation..the process is called
"timestretching" which allows to change the duration
of audio material without changing its pitch..

as I said I only use the speed changed audio for the set in order
to compensate my cameras slightly slower speed...

when cutting the telecined material I use the original song
with its original speed!!!

Christian,

Bear with me. So you shot in camera @ 48fps (check - got it); what do you mean by "using a playback that ran about 20% faster". You mean audio playback on set or visual playback in post? I'm confused.

Also if you shoot at 24fps and telecine transfer @ same is it easy enough to get a decent lip sync on a top end software program eg FCP?
