the story is that it's a mispronunciation of "au revoir les enfants", a french film they had in the video store where tarantino used to work. i have no idea if there's any truth in that though.

best title: blow-up
Blow-up is a weird film. I don't know whether to love it or hate it. It seems to have spawned a genre with films like Coppola's The Conversation and De Palma's Blow Out. I'd love to do a similar story.
worst title: deep throat
Well, at least it added to the English lexicon. When I first heard it I thought it was some kind of disease.

Isn't there a story about Blow Up - they wanted to film The Who with Townsend smashing his guitar - but he wouldn't do it [this is when he was first dong it and it was really trendy then] - so then they got The Yardbirds and Jeff Beck smashed his very unconvincingly -- is that right? - it's been a long time since I've seen it

Blow-up

Post by sonikdeth »

The concept behind Blow-up was great, guy sees murder commited in photo or whatever (also a while since I saw it) but it just got bogged down in arty pretention. Don't get me wrong, I love self-indulgent art films as much as the next man (no really, I do) but Blow-up was just tedious...not a patch on the Conversation in my opinion.

Anyway, back to the point. Best title ever? Female Convict Scorpion: Jailhouse 41. Infact, Japanese cinema has to be the best for film titles.......how about: Tokugawa Sex Prohibition: Lustful Lord, Noboru Ando's Chronicle of Fugitive Days and Sex, Yakuza Cruel Secrets - Arm Dismemberment.........Well at least you can't have a good guess at what sort of film our going to see in advance.....not the most subtle titles!

Worst movie title for me would be: Fun with Dick and Jane.

i saw blow-up in 1965 when it came out with some guys i was in a band with. we were around 20 and wanted to be photographers too, or at least some of us did. i finally tracked down a video of it a few months ago and watched it a couple of times. it is/was tedius and self indulgent. interesting subject matter. i liked the fact that antonioni was doing a lot of long seamless shots of around 20 seconds or so. also the opening to the film was strong. i always like that title though and was fascinated to see that girls will take their clothes off for a good looking guy with a nikon!! :D

The IMDb says The Who were replaced by The Yardbirds because of some dispute, but does not reveal the nature of the dispute.

Ponti was the producer.

I'm good friends with a guitarist from the Yardbirds - Top Topham (his son Nurdin is one of my very best friends). He was voted best guitarist in Q magazine one year. I'll ask him.
