So I guess your position is let's define a businesses credibility by whether or not they make us happy, irrespective of how they treat others.
That wasn't my point, but is an interesting take on the issue. Sacrifice of the common good for the private good, or vice versa? Is it valid or invalid, and how can you show that onscreen?

Again, how best to portray in cinematic terms the feelings of anger and frustration generated by debate? How can somebody be so blind, or so wrongheaded? Can we or should we make circumstantial evidence into irrefutable truths?

And can you think of a way of showing visually the problem of communication between people? Is it possible to make a documentary that shows everyone's viewpoints in a fair light, or must the medium follow the Disney approved good guy/bad guy template :?: Or if you insist that there is a bad guy, how can you use the medium to show it? Eisenstein could, so can you.

Ladies & gents, here's a topic that has been beaten to death on the forum but whose guaranteed red-hot emotional grab is not yet exhausted. You've got the medium, the tools and the passion to prove it. Show don't tell.

I await your Oktober.

The only boredom I endure is waiting for you to actually debate anyone, at all. ;)

I rest my case. :P

Rather than attempt to take the bat and ball and proclaim your intellectual superiority about the discussion at hand, another approach to consider would be to invite JGrube to add his actual personal experience in the Rubbermaid and Walmart incident as it relates to the latest "speculative silliness" as you call it about unions.

But keep in mind that the previous "speculative silliness" that I offered was wholeheartedly agreed with by JGrube. But rather than acknowledge that previous speculation on my part was quite accurate, you ignore that aspect and attempt to be both revisionist and snide with one cryptic self serving comment.

Go ahead, own the thread, take your bat and ball and show us how above it you are.
I don't have unlimited resources or interest in this subject, Alex. I'm not in love with Walmart, I just don't hate them like some of you do. Anyway, they aren't paying me to defend them, and I'm not interested in doing that. I also know that evangelists of the anti-Walmart cult are both intractable and close-minded, like Tim said. (OK, that's not actually what Tim said, but I agree with the sentiment he expressed about close-mindedness. I'm just directing it at a different audience.)

On the other hand, I pre-ordered the anti-Walmart propaganda movie, and I'm looking forward to watching it when it finally gets here sometime in November. How close-minded is that?

Until then, I'll try to respond to this thread without backhanded ad hominems. I apologize.

Well, after the latest town meeting, the first permit process was approved. Looks like walmart is coming to our small rural town by the year 2007. That'll mark the map with a walmart every 50 miles or less in our area. I'll need to contact them before they build and see if this store will be offering cheap movie film processing. Hate to have them miss out on that page in the film processing book. Oh, the devil just popped in when I typed those last two lines. The meeting was overflowing with people, but this first meeting is not the bitch session people were seeking to attend. It was just the planning and zoning meeting where they say yes or no to rezoning the area they wish to build. It's currently a cornfield next to a strip of businesses. The real bitch session city council meeting is yet to come. I think the city council is in for a fun evening as the zoning meeting was overflowing outside the meeting room, but the next will be overwhelmingly attended. They will probably hold it in the same city council chambers which will allow about 10% of the people that wish to attend room to stand. I would guess the next meeting will be a continued on another day, with police in attendance. Get out the film, there'll be a polite riot in out little town. :P

Hey DriveIn,

Keep us up to date on what goes down with this. Passionate interest may rise and fall here on the board, but I for one would enjoy hearing about the "friendly" debate that unfolds in your town hall.

Take care.

"Backhanded ad hominems." I bow to your prose. That's a phrase that gives you away has having been paid to write in the past or present. (that's not meant as an insult).

I think it's great you ordered the videotape.

To get to the bottom of what happened with Walmat and Rubbermaid disenfranchised Rubbermaid Employees should be sponsored for a "vacation" and put up into the homes of people who live near a Walmart.

Then a small group of peaceful protestors can protest outside of the Walmart with their "star" Rubbermaid employee witness. If Walmart stores throughout the country could be protested at the same time it would most definitely put the Rubbermaid issue back on center stage and in the media's eye so that perhaps we could find out exactly what happened.

The part that has me really bugged about Walmart and Rubbermaid is that Rubbermaid apparently sold the plant's equipment and intellectual knowledge overseas. Something smells bad when the U.S., already losing production lines to other countries is actually selling off their blueprints and equipment and in the process putting American workers out of work.

Googling the words Walmart and Rubbermaid, and a lot of stuff comes up.

Here's a link to a PBS Frontline documentary transcript about Walmart...

They even interviewed the head of Rubbermaid, which I guess is no more.
Walmart helped skyrocket Rubbermaid, then basically Walmart played hardball and Rubbermaid tanked as a result.
