Re: New from Moviestuff

Wow! This Retro 8 transfer unit looks amazing. I really like the like the resemblance to the old reel-to-reel tape decks. And it may be "retro", but the technology to do this is futuristic. Great job Roger, it's a fantastic evolution in transfer units. Should be a good seller. The custom build ...

Re: Jonny Quest complete!

Ah HA HA ha ha. That was friggin' awesome to finally see the complete sequence. Being a kid when Jonny Quest was originally broadcast, I definitely "get it". It gave me a rush watching your stop-motion re-creation.

Re: First JQ Update for the new year!

Looks like you are almost finished Roger. Can't wait to see the whole project cut together! I found it amusing that you are using little girl dolls for the basis for Jonny and Hadji, but after some sculpture work it really works great.

Re: Workprinter XP to Sniper (Kinda)

That sounds excellent Roger. I captured all of my super 8 films to SD via the Workprinter about 5 years ago, but always planned to re-do some of them in HD when the technology was ready. Which is pretty much now.

Roger, do you know if the 12x zoom of the Canon HF100 has enough "reach" to work with ...

Re: Workprinter XP to Sniper (Kinda)

Hi avplumber,

Do you like the Blackmagic Intensity Pro card? It seems like a good deal for 200 bucks. I already have all the equipment I need for HD super 8 captures except the hdmi interface. I have an 8 core mac, a canon HF100 camcorder, and the all-important workprinter. Glad to hear that ...

Re: Promote Super 8 (and 16mm)

In the past I have shot many super 8 and 16 mm films for my personal projects, but gradually switched to video by the mid nineties. Until recently it could be argued that super 8 delivers a better image than standard definition video, provided that you are filming with a high-end camera with ...

Re: Workprinter XP to Sniper (Kinda)

I have a HF100, the predecessor to the camera you are talking about. It does indeed have a live HDMI output, so I presume the new HF200 would as well.

Like you, I have a workprinter and wonder how it would work out with my Canon HD camera. If you get the HD transfers going with a Blackmagic card ...

Re: Personal animation project....

Roger plays with dolls! :D Actually, Johnny Quest is one of my favorites too. The machine gun shot came out great, and the camera move adds that extra touch. This is going to be quite a project, as each shot is basically a one-off. A lot of sets and puppets to make for only a few seconds each. I ...

Re: Focal brand Film

If I remember correctly, Focal was the brand of Kmart. I'm sure some other company actually manufactured this film, but Kmart sold it under their banner. I shot a roll or two of it in the seventies, and it was pretty bad quality. The daylight ASA 40 film was grainy and had a greenish cast. It sucked ...

Re: Stabilization/Smoothing in FCP6 and Motion 3

I have stabilized a ton of super 8 footage using iStablize. If you are using a Mac, I highly recommend it. Recently I bought Final Cut Studio, and experimented with the smoothcam filter in FCP6 and Motion 3. I found that the stabilization in those apps to be not as good as iStabilize. Plus ...

1.3 megapixel USB microscope. Good for home telecine?

I ran across this item on Think Geek. It's a digital microscope, 1280x1024 pixels. A unit like this might be adaptable to a Workprinter type of telecine unit. Very small, so it should clear most projector housings. I have no idea how good the optics or color are, or its maximum frame rate. Only 350 ...

If you post on Youtube, expect horrible image quality. The site is so popular that they purposely try to keep the bandwidth down by over-compressing the videos. I have a number of my films on youtube, but also on Google Video which has much better images. My time-lapse films completely fall apart on ...

The new site looks great Roger. It loads up pretty snappy on my system, not too slow in my opinion. The new RGB Workprinter looks cool with the condenser lens directly in front with no mirror. Since there is no front surface mirror, does it rely on software to give the correct orientation to the ...

I use the Sony TRV-950 for my workprinter setup, its great! 3 ccd, manual controls. Whats not to like? I only use if for super 8 films, never tried regular 8. The zoom will go further than I need for super 8, so I believe it has the "reach" for the smaller reg 8 frame if you need it.

The music in the above was amazing, did you actually have someone compose those scores?

Mirage was great to watch too, really smooth work, choreography was really well executed. Did you edit out any frames from mistakes?

All the music of the films presented on my website is "scored" with ...
