Re: NAB 2017 - any film/cine news?

Too bad they don't have a zoom/movable camera/lens so you could get the same nice resolution for smaller formats. Only 35mm at full resolution. This is one of those basic design flaws that I just can't understand. If you work exclusively in 35mm, which perhaps some shops in LA do, fine...but there ...

Re: Sample images from the new Müller HDS scanner

Hi Frank! Yes, this is the IMX174, but I also got the ICX834 which I haven't tested yet. Andreas Hi Andreas, I expect you know, but you need to select Video Mode 7 (in the GenICam tab) to get the camera to use 12bits of A/D. Strange they did this 10bit/12bit thing just on the IMX range in the GS3 c...

Re: Sample images from the new Müller HDS scanner

Nice samples Andreas. Which camera option did you go for, the IMX174 sensor?

Re: DIY Telecine camera upgrade options

Think I am gonna pull the trigger on the CM3-U3-31S4C-CS. Unfortunately it is out of stock at moment. Also when trying to make an account I could not find Sweden in the drop down. Actually I could not find any of the Nordic countries in the drop down. I'll proxy buy it from the USA if needed I thin...

Re: DIY Telecine camera upgrade options

So these are the ones to beat for about 500USD it sounds like. Point Grey Grasshopper3 GS3-U3-32S4C (Sony IMX252) 2048x1536 Point Grey Chameleon3 CM3-U3-31S4C (Sony IMX265) 2048x1536 It is mentioned above that they both use the same sensor? When I looked them up it seems one uses a IMX252 and the o...

Re: DIY Telecine camera upgrade options

I have used DFK 31BU03 for a few years now. The camera was trigged with 5 volt puls from the projector. Now i have bought a point grey grasshopper camera. But i do not understand how to trigger this camera. Which GPI0 should i use and how many volts. Have asked point grey but they have not get resp...

Re: Playback speed for frame by frame capture

I've tried to download the avifrate software but my virus checker deemed it unsafe and firefox didn't like the download page. Strange, my checker and browser have no problems with it and it is a well known utility that has been around for many years. Sometimes I think virus checkers (in their bona-...

Re: Playback speed for frame by frame capture

Some NLE's are a pain when it comes to frame rates as they will often automatically try to interpolate (in one of several ways) source files to the project frame rate. If you just want to first of all see what looks right, then use the avifrate utility (http://www.am-soft.ru/avifrate.html ) to stamp...

Re: Removing Orange Mask from Colour Negative Scans

You could be right in that the print paper could easily have had a non-linear response dyes, the inverse to the film.

Re: Removing Orange Mask from Colour Negative Scans

Not to diminish the author of the PDF's work, but I've found what they say is not correct. The mask is not "equivalent to a uniform coloured filter (etc)". The mask varies in inverse proportion to the dye record. So unless you are exposing a uniform scene (such as a grey card or white she...

Re: RetroScan UNIVERSAL

This is not true. As you decrease the definition of the sensor and/or lens you increase the grain aliasing. You get a "grainier" image. As you increase the resolution of the sensor/lens you decrease this graininess. This is because the graininess in most film scans is not the native grain...

Re: RetroScan UNIVERSAL

Capturing at a resolution higher than the source image won't give you a result with any higher resolution than the source image. But what it will do, and both of these are extremely important (if not more important) and that is: 1. reduce grain aliasing 2. increase the depth of the result (more bit...

Re: RetroScan UNIVERSAL

Yes, the formulas don't take into account any perceptual factors. They describe what is otherwise happening before anyone looks at the film. Nor taken into account the actual image data on the film. Given that the exposures will likely have been around 300 times longer than the scanning times we ar...

Re: RetroScan UNIVERSAL

My Cine2Digits system doesn't care what speed the film moves at, it can change as much as it likes during the scan as it is frame by frame and all I do is stamp the resulting avi with the correct (user selectable) original fps rate. Obviously there are limits, like camera frame rate, disk speed, acc...
