I think the results from this machine look fairly decent for what it is... perfect for regular folks who just to watch their old home movies..
Really? I think the compression and artifacting on that is shockingly brutal. I've seen film-to-VHS-to-digital transfers with more sharpness and detail ...

Re: Identifying 16mm sound (6 track optical???)
Btw, great filmstrip. Would love to see one of these. I have never seen more tracks than 2 here in our facility.
Neither have we. It's bizarre. I guess I kind of want a sanity check. This really looks like 6 tracks of optical to other people too?
And my googling has turned up nothing. Not a ...

Identifying 16mm sound (6 track optical???)
So I've got a roll of 16mm film with a really odd optical track. It sure looks like 6 channels of optical audio which is absurd and ridiculous. Does anyone have any idea what this is and how it could be played? I've attached an image. You might need to scroll over to the optical track on the far ...

Re: wolverine film scanner from B&H
I can't find them now, but I ran across some test video and reviews of this a while ago. The two biggest issues seems to be that its only output is heavily compressed mp4 files and that it blends everything into a 30fps video stream. So no individual frames and lots of compression artifacts.

Re: Perry Movie Transfers
"1080 quality" could actually be achieved by scanning 8mm film in standard definition PAL and then uprezzing to 1080.
If I ask them what the resolution is and they say it is 1080 and it's really 964, they have misrepresented the technical specs of the camera. But if they say the camera is 964 ...

Re: GamMac: a new Avisynth tool to remove color cast
Neat technique. Looks similar to some of the automatic curves adjustment tools in Photoshop. If so, watch for some odd results in edge cases where the original footage genuinely had little or no information in one or more of the colour channels. Examples would be shots of blue sky over blue water ...

Re: Perry Movie Transfers
You could realistically cut the resolution by 30% or more down to only 720p and, honestly, you'd never see the difference on regular 8 or super 8 home movies displayed on a typical 42 inch diagonal flat screen and you could double the resolution and it still wouldn't be enough for 16mm Kodachrome ...

Re: Perry Movie Transfers
Huh. 964 is only 90% of 1080p, and you have to be cropping inside the frame otherwise you'd lose even more when you crop out any oversampling. Just feels kind of disingenuous. 1080p is a very specific technical claim.

Re: Perry Movie Transfers
That's good to know. Quick question Roger, on her page is says she is capturing at 1080p. Does that mean you have upgraded the camera?

I hope you made sure to use the electronic shutter on the camera and not the mechanical one, otherwise you are going to kill your mechanism in a hurry doing this.

Re: Uncompressed Workflow Retro-Universal
Thanks very much for this. The difference between the original 1080 and the Vimeo 1080 version is really shocking. But for 50x the file size it better be!
I'm looking at the uncompressed version and it looks like there is an awful lot of colour noise in the image. Is that just me, or do you notice ...

Re: Sample images from the new Filmfabriek HDS scanner
Tscan, the Muller scanners work with any of the Point Grey cameras (and from what I understand from their site, should work with almost any USB3vision camera). The two Muller lists on their site are recommendations, but not requirements. Andreas and RCBasher are just referring to the cameras by the ...
